PE and Sports Premium

Sports Premium Budget for 2022-2023

Our Vision

At St Leonard’s we aim to provide high quality physical education for all children, delivered by well trained and confident members of staff, who are committed to engaging pupils and developing their skills in this area of the curriculum. Through our curricular and extra-curricular provision we are dedicated to ensuring that every young person has the opportunity and confidence to participate, lead and perform in PE and Sport. We firmly believe that engagement in PE and Sport can support the holistic development of young people. By providing these opportunities for our pupils, we aim to have a positive impact on their physical literacy, all round health and confidence, whilst developing key skills and attributes including teamwork, fair play and respect for others.

Background

The government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for the academic years 2013/14 through to 2018-2023 to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Each school will receive £16,000 plus an extra £10 per pupil each year for the next few years. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Recently the government have committed to funding the primary school Sports Premium up until 2023 - an investment worth £750 million.

Purpose of funding

Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers during PE lessons

  • supporting and engaging the least active children by running after-school sports clubs e.g. Change4Life clubs

  • providing professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport

  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport

  • investing in quality PE and sport equipment

  • running sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games

  • developing further links with other schools within the local area and the Trust.
