Reading- at home

In Year 2, the children should read at home for a minimum of 10 minutes a day. This should be recorded in your child’s home reading record. In school reading will not be recorded in reading records as teachers have their own in school records.

Time is allocated for changing books upon arrival to school. Teachers will regularly remind the children to change their book if they need to but the children do this themselves.

Phonics play - a useful game to practice reading and segmenting sounds

Reading -in school

teacher or teaching assistant will listen to the children read at least once a fortnight. We will aim to hear the children more frequently where possible but curriculum demands leave only a small amount of additional time. All children are currently receiving daily phonics or whole class guided reading with a teacher.

We keep book band levels under constant review and will move children on to the next colour as soon as they are ready. To move on, they need to show they are able to both decode (read) the words and that they have an appropriate level of comprehension (understanding) for that colour band. While they may decode the words well, we will only move them on once they also have achieved a good level of comprehension too.

Here are some useful questions you may wish to ask your child when reading with them at home to help develop their comprehension skills:
