Key Concept 3: I can add / subtract two 2-digit numbers that cross the tens boundary. 

This is perhaps the most challenging part of addition and subtraction for Year 2 children. Any practise of this skill at home as shown in the videos below will be beneficial.

In this clip we look at 38+25 =

We know that this will cross the tens boundary because when the ones are added together they are larger than ten. 8 + 5 will be larger than ten so this calculation will cross the boundary and we need to calculate the answer as shown in the clip.

We know that this calculation will cross the tens boundary because 3 ones subtract 6 ones would be less than 0.

We looked at this in class by recognising that 3 ones is not enough to subtract 6 ones in one jump on the number line so we have to partition it as shown in the video clip.
