Block 1 - Place Value

Key Concepts

Here are three key concepts that the children have learned about place value. The information about each concept will help you to practise it at home.

Year 2 children will most likely need to revise and practise key concept 3 the most. So do ensure that you get to this video clip below.

Key Concept 1: I can correctly write numbers in numerals / digits up to 100.

In this concept, the children should be able to able to write all numbers from 0 to 100.

They should be able to form each digit from 0-9 starting and finishing in the correct place.

They should be able to write 2-digit numbers the correct way around.

Have a go at filling in the missing numbers on the 100 square to practise this.

Download below.

Key Concept 2: I can partition numbers into tens and ones.

The children should understand that 2-digts numbers can be split into tens and ones.

Here is a video clip to help with this concept.

Can you practise partitioning numbers into tens and ones?

Write it as a number sentence, a part-whole model and as a place value chart.

Start by doing 61 like the picture below and then choose some other numbers.

Key Concept 3: I can partition numbers in different ways.

Watch this video clip to help with this concept. There is an activity towards the end of the clip.
